DLT and digital assets have had a tumultuous year in 2022/2023 – but our fourth, annual industry survey into where and how DLT is being used highlights a steady increase in the maturity of this technology across the capital markets.
While the majority of DLT projects are still limited in scale, developing ecosystems are delivering multilateral benefits. As over 25% of projects involve 6+ organisations more digital liquidity pools are starting to form.
Against a backdrop of reduced investment budgets in 2023, it is not surprising that today’s DLT is primarily about delivering cost efficiencies (with a 16% year-on-year growth in the number of firms running DLT projects to derive operational savings).
We have seen a 7% increase in the number of firms who are “live” with DLT and digital assets over the last 12 months – compared with 24% jump from 2021 to 2022.
DLT is more important than ever to the buy side in 2023, but asset owners are disengaging with DLT – seeing it as 50% less relevant to their businesses than in the previous year.
Whilst CBDC development continues to be backed, the approach to the funding leg is increasingly pragmatic with increased willingness to leverage other technologies for major currencies, especially EUR, GBP and USD.
39% of the industry is now live with DLT, a 7% increase on 2022. Meanwhile, project ‘building’ activity has declined by 7% YoY.
